The Mask Project
The mask project was a long term project based on the illogical and faulty philosophy of socialization which states that some people are so stupid that they are influenced by others. The project was to create an mask that displays our true "feelings" and how we feel we are told to conform to society. We also wrote an essay about the functions of society and how the alleged philosophy of socialization fits into an society. The functions of a society under this system and how the cycle works, or we could choose to write about how this system would effect us. We were requested to connect the masks to the essay by depicting how this hypothetical system would effect with visual art in the form of a artistic decoration (I was one of the few to make a mask that was wearable) to then display. The overarching theme for the project was the concept of social engineering in regards to large groups of people and reeducation in respect to conformity and normalization of an individual. The ideas of the project were focused on the natural process of a civilization in the sense that one of unorthodox persuasion will have to tolerate the different conditions of a society in order to more effectively ingrain and function. We started this project with several articles, videos and a film focused on the designation of different social groups within a larger structure and conceptual ideas behind the philosophy of socialization. Then we started a mini project by creating a "meme" about how others perceive us and how we perceive ourselves.
On this project I have written two essays instead of the one required as the first one was improperly designed and thus had to be obliterated leaving me to make a second one. In doing so I effectively doubled my workload for similar product thus displaying my devotion to getting a passing grade. I made a mediocre final product but spent a large amount of time on my mask. The mask while lacking skill or creativity comparatively to other peoples products is about the best I can do with my lacking artistic talent and incompetent design principles. To phrase it simply I am not an artist and thus my product while simple is the upmost of my abilities. The essay however is under my usual standards and if I could do it again I would have spent more time refining it and thinking about it before its creation instead of the rushed state I pushed through. If I could have done it again then I would also have spent more time refining my mask as although it was the upmost of my artistic abilities it might have been improved with a few more sandings to smooth it down. However despite that i would say that my final product was of acceptable quality if somewhat lacking refinement.
The project was a simple task set with little variation or unexpected difficulties in relation to the straightforward concept of mask creation and design and the simple act of essay creation. However the concepts that the project presupposes to teach are while terrifically flawed and illogical are interesting philosophical systems to explain the difference between separate groups over an extended slots of time. It fails however to explain how culture alters and grows over time. I think I can understand where the concept of socialization could be applied in terms of societal education in regards to youth indoctrination. My artistic skill have not improved much except for a new material discovered called plaster of parris (the material we made the masks out of) and the fact that my mask looks really creepy when worn (as displayed below) but I did manage to learn how to use other previously know materials more effectively although not to create better art. My understanding of essay writing has improved by default of process so to say that I am better now because I have spent more time doing the task and therefore natural progression of skill declares that I improve through practice however the essay for this project was not particularly difficult or variant from other works. Overall I would state with uncertainty that my essay writing has improved at least slightly. While I do not personally believe (or at least understand) the functions of this philosophy I can state that the principles of the concept are a known quantity. In conclusion the project from my perspective was an introduction to a new concept I had no previous experience with.
Truth Of War
The Finnish republic Essay:
a.The finns despite being an ancient ethnic and language group had not been an independent nation since the middle ages thus when it broke away from the mainland of russia (it owner at the time) during the imperial collapse it was in a prime position to make itself a new and independent nation. It had its own language deviant from the common russian and had a greatly opposing culture under their new democratic capitalist government to the tyrannical communist government of the red empire under stalin.
b.The Finns were the overarching title given to the northern tribes inhabiting the eastern reaches of scandinavia all the way to the eastern arctic sea. Originally divided into several pagan tribes (most predominantly the Driiksirvist and the Driuk) who remained divided and quarrelsome until the larger powers in the west saw an easy conquest in their territory and began colonization and conquest of their territories (mostly sweden) after the reign of christian the bloodlover of sweden the lands of finland were slowly ceded to russia and rule of the territory was passed over to the tsars who ruled with a loose hand only demanding tithe and conscripts. After the imperial decline and eventual collapse of the russian empire and replacement with the provisional government the finnish decided to end its contacts with russia under a democratic socialist union and declared independence. Afterwards the country faced its own civil disputes as the “reds” (an communist faction) and the “whites” (capitalist) engaged in a brutal civil war determining the future functions of its society. After the whites claimed a hard won victory they ruled as a democratic capitalist republic until the time of stalin. When stalin and his red empire were first making moves to expand and secure their territory they saw the the finns to the north and began working out methods to reclaim their lost territory.

b.when Stalin first came to power and began his regime of terror (mostly fueled by genocide and expansion) he saw a threat in almost every shadow. So much so that when he began to suspect a rebellion from his officers corps he began mass executions and purges of those he saw as particularly dangerous. Thus when he began looking externally for further challengers his eyes and mind flew far to the north to the deep forested country of Finland and the strategic position it occupied in regards towards Russian invasion. As the capital of the country (and primary military center) was only a days march from the Russian border. Stalin deciding that the peaceful and disinterested nation of Finland was moments away from a Russian invasion. He sent several convoys towards Finland offering to move the Finland border in exchange for large amounts of Russian land however before a response could be formed decided that the peaceful Finns were too much of a threat. He immediately launched a full scale invasion of Finland to claim the land demands he had made previously and planned for his massive army of 700,000 along with thousands of tanks,planes,and artillery devices. However in his actions Stalin forgot one huge thing, Nords. The Finnish people launched a large scale mobilization using the terrain and their mobile infantry to outmaneuver the larger Russian army thus resulting in incredible Russian losses in relation to far smaller Finland losses. The Russian army while eventually claiming victory by capturing the Finnish capital suffered almost half losses compared to fractional Finnish losses (mostly obtained during the fight for the Finnish capital). The Russians receive far more land their original demands (almost 11%) of then Finland and did claim the ultimate gain however the catastrophic losses proved that the size and overwhelming numbers of the red empire could easily be defeated by superior strategy. One particular strategy used by the Finnish for example was ski troopers (literally assault troopers on skis) used to vastly outmaneuver the Russian tanks and foot troops in the deep snow. Along with using the natural terrain to field melee and other close combat ranks against long range units in close quarters allowed the Finnish to take on armies several times the size of their own. One key factor of their defense resting on this was a fierce pride and independence employed by the Finnish mindset one commander even stating “If the Germans come’,‘we lose our freedom. If the Russians come, we lose our souls”. This quote displays in perfection the ideals of the Finnish defenders throughout the duration of the war and their unwillingness to surrender. Several battle occurred throughout the duration of the conflict and all but one was a absolute Finnish victory,

E.Depiction of war is best displayed not in chaos and calamity but in the cold silence of death. And blood burns bright upon snow and ice. Thus no war could be displayed of the red army better than their campaign in finland and the resistance to the communist advance played by the stubborn finish.

Meille on määrätty siirtymään takaisin Raatesta ja vetäytymään puolustus kelpoi siin paikkoihin lähellä linnoitusta. Olemme alkaneet evakuoida siviilejä, jotta voisimme perustaa tykistöä ja kaivoja. Reflection
The winter war was a perfect example of the aggressive expansionist ideals of the medieval society and later napoleonic era, conflicting with the modern tactical constraints and functions of modern weaponry. The concepts of nationalism directly contradicting the idea of reasonable surrender and the indomitable odds of a lesser nation being invaded. The direct opposition of incompatible ideals when they are introduced into an new environment where already established values are present. Yet above all else displayed the power and efficiency of clever tactics and fierce independence above the materialistic concepts of numbers of deployable might. Hundreds of thousands of russian soldiers perished under the intense winter conditions and enemy opposition of finland trading their entire existence for several hundred miles of uninhabited wilderness and near arctic wasteland, all at the order of a half crazed dictator who killed his own citizens with impunity and cruelty. Contrariwise the finlanders who lived in an small and unimportant country found within their tactical deployments and superior mobility an series of victories and dominations. The guerrilla warfare the finns displayed would further fuel a new era of conflict after the fighting in europe had resolved whereas armies would no longer attempt to combat in open battle but rather launch strikes and raids against one another. While noone at the time would have guessed it the model of war finnish ski troops and wood troops of hit and run would become the new standard of engagement. While the winter was was a lesser conflict compared to the second world war or the lesser stemming conflicts that occured the events and revelations occuring during its duration had long felt impacts.
The finnish troops while Far lesser in number and suffering are perfect exemplar of the conceptual ideas behind the winter war displaying the brutality and general tactical overbearing of the conflict. Their desperate fight for independence could be compared and not unfairly to the 300 of the spartans or the Samurai at Shiroyama with their fierce fight against hopeless odds returning an extraordinary outcome. The romantic depiction of soldiers fighting for their homeland and independence is one purported throughout history and tells a far more intriguing story than one of hostile invasion. The short story I wrote from the perspective of a finnish captain fighting in the first confrontations of the winter war for obvious reasons favors the finnish defenders and in particular prefers to refer to their perspective and experience of the conflict as a defending force against overwhelming odds they faced in regards to the massive and well organized (slightly less after stalin's purges) red army. The finnish captain I focus on while fictional would of course be involved in historical events and locations particularly around the battle of raate road. A important and decisive battle for the outcomes of the war and the first push made by the USSR.
When the USSR first initiated negotiations with the finnish government (who had been a vassal of the russian empire) their demands were simply to move the finnish border an eleven miles away from that of the USSR however the refusal on the part of the finnish was seen as aggressive (by the paranoid stalin) The USSR refused to consider that the finnish did not want to just give up their territory and assumed that they must without doubt be plotting an invasion. The resulting collapse of negotiation led to a sudden and violent attack from the USSR pushing its massive army towards the finnish capital. The finnish being a large country of drunken rage pugs began an immediate defensive strategy stopping up the russian army at the battle of raate road and continuing a brutal campaign of warfare against the USSR troops employing guerrilla tactics and drawing out engagements to negate the large number advantage of the red army. The depiction I choose to show of russian soldiers assaulting a hilltop fortress would have fallen sometime in the battle of raate road as different russian legions battled finnish ski troops and artillery embankments. The battle was important to the russian offensive as it would have allowed them (had they won) an full offensive push towards the finnish capital and several other important cities and production centers imperative to the finnish army. Thus it is far from unusual that the most direct and well maintained road to the capital would be a battlefield of vast strategic importance. Raate road was important to both sides and while the russians did eventually claim victory it was not without incomparable casualties, thus the finnish promise was fulfilled and the russians paid for every step of land with blood.
