Reflection

  1. In general, how has Spanish 3 gone for you this year? (great opportunity to highlight the context of fully online!!)

I would say that notwithstanding the terrible impediment imposed by the lockdowns and the online learnings massive inefficiency, that this year of spanish was both tolerable and productive. However it must also be said that the online learning format made any progress in this subject so painfully slow that the entire semester was redundant and a complete waste of my time. In fact while these two sentences may seem contradictory, I merely would state that the class was as productive as could be possibly expected from such impossible circumstances. I would say that there is no person on this planet who can learn a language sitting in front of an computer screen and listening to someone speak it on the other end, or by reading a book in an language they don’t even understand.

  1. What were the most powerful lessons you learned?  (this could be regarding language, culture or about yourself)

By the eternal lord, I hate the spanish language. I am utterly incapable of learning a language through a computer and the online class format was a massive waste of my time. I am not able to learn spanish through an instructor that I cannot see. I would say that this is important for my future learning as a language student and that I should work to improve my ability to learn from online instruction going forwards, even though the pandemic is ending. But within the experience I have had with this class over this year and my own inability to learn from an online language platform, I would say that my skills as an learner have been put into an stark and clear display of parameters of function.

  1. What were your biggest challenges?  How did you (or did you not) overcome them?

My biggest challenges were even showing up to the class at 8:00 every morning, I was usually only awake for about an hour before the class started and thus I was always unable to actually listen to the teacher.

  1. What were your biggest successes?

Passing the class

  1. What are your personal short term and long term goals regarding language learning?

In the immediate future I hope to start pulling some extra classes at the Fort for spanish, while at the same time I am working to teach myself chinese in my own time. I really think the only way to improve my spanish from here would be to start speaking it with other people. Thus I might try to engage my sister in spanish talks in the next few weeks. Otherwise my primary focus will now be chinese.
